Vancouver is the fifth strongest city economy out of the 15 largest cities in Canada. The city does more than $43 billion in trade with over 90 countries annually. Port activities only already generate about $4 billion. With their fast growth rate, Vancouver is expected to add 30,000 jobs this year and the unemployment rate is said to fall from 7.3% to 6.1% in 2015.[Parry,2014]
Vancouver is mainly known as the headquarters of forestry. Vancouver does manufacturing of paper and wood and also logging. This means that they are both a secondary and primary industry. They are primary because they take resources from earth, which in this case are trees, but they also manufacture the resources which makes them a secondary industry. The urban forests alone in Metro Vancouver provide $225 million. Think about all the indirect/direct resource and manufacturing based jobs Vancouver creates.[Vancouver Sun,2013]
With the many trees, forests, and profit, Vancouver uses the clear cutting method. The quickest and cheapest way of logging operations. Clear cutting is when the loggers remove every single tree, which leaves a barren land behind. If seeds are not planted again, soil can erode and trees may decrease in value. Of course, this is a unsustainable method. Other ways of keeping sustainability is using different methods. Two other fantastic methods is shelterwood logging and selective cutting. Shelterwood logging when the loggers only cut part of the forest, which leaves just enough trees to regenerate over time. Selective cutting is only cutting down a specific size, type, and mature tree. This leave plenty of trees left in the forest. Unfortunately, these two methods are more expensive than clear cutting due to the amount of effort, but they are worth it in the end. Shelterwood logging and selective cutting will sustain the industry because these methods will increase the value of the trees and forest with time and patience. In due time, the forest will be able to regenerate more desirable trees. Using these two methods will surely increase sustainability in the environment and the industry's sustainability despite the cost of it.
